The Essence of a thing

As a writer, when I write poems, I love to connect to the essence of a thing. When I go into writing mode, I don’t necessarily write about the physical structure of a thing, but rather, what the physical structure represents or feels like on an internal level. The essence of a thing is what I love to feel and focus my attention on.

Everything has its physical structure but then it also has its inner essence. The best way to describe it, is the qualities that the thing contains or emits. So for example, the flower has its physical structure, what it appears physically to our eyes. But the flower also has an essence; and my interpretation of the flower’s essence, is in her expression of beauty and on the feelings that she represents within her physical expression.

In modern day life, we have become so fixated on physical structure and on the external, that we’ve detached ourselves from the essence and qualities of a thing. External reality is what gets most of our attention. But despite this, we are always connected to the inner qualities and essence of everything, even if we’re not fully aware of it. I feel that it happens on a deeper level. But the more in tune we are with ourselves, the easier we can connect on that level.

The easiest way to connect with the essence of a thing, is to be in nature. In nature, we are detached from the noise of modern civilization, and our senses can replenish. We can become more in tune with our inner senses in nature because that is our natural state. When we are in nature, we are connected more fully to our inner selves. We are nature. So when we are in nature, we can feel and sense the essence of the nature around us. Our minds can be immersed in essence and less on the physical appearances we’ve built in modern day. In nature, we are in the organic world; our bodies are relaxed in their natural states. The shapes and colors that surround us provide a home for us.
